Professional Tape Recorders that I would recommend you buy in 2024 !!!

Folks ask me all the time IF having and using a fully Pro Tape Recorder
in their studio is worthwhile or even a good thing.

Often that is a long conversation about the history of Audio recording,
the development over time of the quality of the Tape Recorders and Audio Tape,
and the skill and knowledge required to actually correctly use Tape Recording.

Here are the Professional Studio Tape Recorders I recommend in 2024... and one's I'd avoid...

First off you MUST know what you are buying - and have Tested it yourself
or hired a good HONEST experienced tech to do it for you.
Too many JUNKER machines are for sale now - worn out, not fully working, and just bad.
You MUST know the real actual condition of the machine yourself
NEVER trust the Seller or Broker !!!

Recommended  Professional  Studio Tape Recorders

OTARI   Multitracks:     5050 8 track (later versions only!)

2 tracks:   MX-50   •   5050 (later versions only!)

NOT Recommended Professional Studio Tape Recorders
not in any order... These are just too old now... or very difficult to get parts for !!!

STUDER   Multitracks:     A-80

OTARI   Multitracks:     MTR-90 mkI   •   MX-7000 series     5050 8 track early version (2 piece)

AMPEX   Multitracks:     ATR-116 and ATR-124 *  •   MM1000   •   MM1100   •   AG-440 8 track

MCI   2 track:     JH-110 (all versions)   •   APR 5000 series *

3M   2 track:    M23   •   M64

SCULLY   2 track:    280   •   280B

  * = not many made and hard to repair

Tape Recorders I would say to AVOID buying !!!
not in any order... These have Electronic parts no longer available!!!

The below listed machines have IC's and Relays that are Obsolite and No Longer Available or Hard to find...

STUDER - REVOX:     A-67   •   B-67   •   A-700     All use Obsolete Xport Control ICs.

OTARI:     MX-5050 'BII' - uses uPC571C ICs and Obsolete Relays   •
Note: this is NOT the 'B2' version which is Fine !!

Tascam - Teac:     X-10     uses HA11122W IC   •

This is NOT to say a well running tape recorder in my 'Not Recommended' list isn't any good -
Many of them were and still are great sounding machines!

But they are old and usually showing the signs of age and wearing out...
requiring more and more maintenance and parts replacement - IF you can find parts !

The above lists are just my opinion as to what I'd recommend you buy in 2024.
And ONLY if they are running fine and have No Problems !!!

But if you live far away from a good local experienced tape recorder tech
Many of the recomended machines still might be a poor choice...
You need to have a good well experienced tape Tech close by...
